Selection of generator set for generator set used needs to consider several factors. But the main purpose of using the generator set is used as a backup power supply from the power outages. Selection of generator set should be considered to suit for types of applications. Which can be classified as follows.
  1. Standby Rating
  2. Prime (Continuous) Rating
  3. Base Load Rating
  1. Standby Rating
    This type of generator set is generator backup when electric power is lost during a short period of time is not very long. Generator set with power will supply to the main electrical system when a problem happen main electrical. But this type of generator to limit working hours must not exceed 500 hours per year and can not  over load.

  2. Prime (Continuous) Rating
    This type of generator set as backup generators when electricity from the same power outages and generator of this type can be used continuously. Unlimited working hours but the load must not exceed 80% of the this rating and can over load 10% for 1 hour in every 12 hours of operation.

  3. Base Load Rating
    Generator set this type of generator is used as a major power for areas without access to electricity,  such as the island and a generator of this type can also over load 10% for 1 hour in every 12 hours of operation.

The generator set will be selected to suit the type of use. It should be considered to be appropriate to the nature of the applications with the following.

1. Basic Generator Set

These generator sets are characterized by the use of bare. To be installed in rooms that are not waterproof. And should be installed of Sound Attenuator and Soundproof to the walls of the room to keep the noise not outside the room make nuisance to neighbors.

2. Canopy Soundproof Generator Set

Some of the locations used in the installation can not installed in the room. The design of the generator set is inserted in the canopy. Then it was installed outside the building and can do Soundproof and Sound Attenuator to the walls of canopy to keep a noise not outside make nuisance to neighbors. We call this type of generator set that canopy soundproof. The size of the generator set should not exceed 500 KVA is appropriate.

3. Trailer Generator Set

These generator set is designed to work with moveable because it have drag devices and generator set in the canopy, it can cover weathered, and can do Soundproof, Sound Attenuator same. But this type of generator sets are not large, should not exceed 100 KVA is appropriate to drag.

4. Containerized Generator Set

We can design a generator set and put in a Container and it can be installed outside the building. Has weathered. This container can do Soundproof, Sound Attenuator to the walls of container to keep the noise not outside. The size of the generator set should more than  500 KVA is appropriate for container.

5. Mobile Generator Set

We can design a generator set put in a canopy and can be installed on the truck with 6 or 10 wheels. The use can drive the truck go to other place for standby generator set as requirement.

To calculate the size of the generator set.
When we choose the type and application of the work then would be considered was the size of the generator set. It can be calculated as follows.


Formula KVA = 1.732VI / 1000
KVA = size of the generator required
V = Voltage is measured in volts (V)
I = electric current is measured in amperes (A)
Assume electrical load equal to 300 A. substitute the recipes are KVA = 207.84
But because the power system have the power factor is approximately equal to 0.8
So the size of the generator set 
  KVA = 207.84 / 0.8
         = 259.8
Thus, the size of the generator set is more than   260 KVA
  If the size choice = 260 KVA
  The generator set can give current   
    I = (260 x 1000) / (1.732 x 400) 
      = 375 A (Cover load  300 A)
  Then the size of generator set to choice is more than  260  KVA

In choosing a generator set is a primary consideration. Choosing the type, the applications of generator set and determining the size of the generator sets are used for backup power systems to high quality and stable next.
